Spring Cleaning for your Workouts

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

As spring is busting out all over, don’t forget that this is the season of renewal – a perfect time to refresh and jazz up your old exercise routine or create a totally new workout.

If you’ve done the same old routine over and over again, you might be in a fitness rut. Spring is an ideal time to try out a new program or even just reinvigorate your existing one.

Updating an exercise regimen from time to time is a good idea; not only does this prevent boredom – the main reason why people give up exercising – but it also ensures that you don’t reach a plateau, with your body adapting to the repetitive training.

You want to keep yourself physically and mentally challenged. If you add variety to your routine every two to three weeks, your workouts will be more enjoyable and beneficial.

How can you spruce up your routine?  Try these steps:

Mix it up!If your usual session consists of just one or two machines at the gym, you are not putting all your body systems through the paces (or keeping your workout interesting).  Take it up a notch by alternating cardio, strength, core, endurance, flexibility, and balance training.

HIIT the mark!If you don’t have a lot of time but would still like to get the most benefit from your routine, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), is exactly what you need.  It provides a good cardio workout, burns fat, and increases endurance. Maximum benefit in minimum time!

Work out with a group. Research has shown the benefits of working out with others.  A group helps keep you motivated and encourages you to push yourself to new levels. Last but certainly not least, it keeps exercise interesting and fun!

Where can you find a workout that is fresh, varied, and effective?

Boot camps are by far the best because they combine all these elements. There is no better place for your ‘spring training’!
